Once conceived we had the option to know the sex of the child, as we were in Kuwait during that time and determining the sex of the child is not prohibited unlike in India. In India, it was illegal to ask and also to be notified by the Doctor, about the Sex of the Child, due to the fact that girl childs were aborted in India. In India, still the boy was considered superior to the girl child and also as a torchbearer of the family heritage and whatever misconceptions that accompanied it. Having a girl child meant, she would be married into someone else's family and lose the family tag name and adopt that of the husband's family. And also, the traditional and customary aspects of the girl's child to undertake the marriage ceremony, gifting of jewels, vessels and what not's depending upon wealth of the girl's family and the demands of the boy's family. Things are changing now albeit slowly.

In our family, especially in my side, I have a brother and two cousins, so it was a boys only family. In Vidya's side, it was 3 girls and one boy. Her family was large and she had many extended cousins. We somehow wished it would be a girl but were also okay even if it was a boy. The reason being, girls were considered cute, obedient, caring and loving. My Son is going to hate me after reading this line in particular. Are'nt boys equally, if not more caring and loving? let's debate about that in a separate chapter and let it rest for now. Well, it could be a mirage, but everyone has their perceptions and beliefs and so do we.

So, it was time now to decide on the baby names and we had to keep both genders ready as the naming ceremony happens on the 11th day after the child is born.

These days, the internet is a virtual boon and also a bane for everything. So, I downloaded names from the internet and we went through the names and shortlisted a few of them, for a boy as well as a girl.

And once he was born, it narrowed down to the boy's name list. Out of this we had selected some of the names and asked for the opinion of the elders. Being a traditional family, some of the names suggested by us were not to their liking and we finally ended up choosing Anirud.

You may wonder why not Anirudh...as it's usually spelt and written. Therein comes my Dad with is numerology. And yes, I do believe in whatever he says...he puts his heart and soul in whatever he does and hence there is no questioning his talent and more so his intent.
